Mission

The East Coast Composers’ Ensemble was founded in 2005 by John Aylward, Wes Matthews and Nathan Shields, with the mission of supporting the creation and per- formance of contemporary art music through concerts, symposia, and outreach events. ECCE’s goal is to help revitalize the connection between contemporary music and the wider intellectual and artistic community, and to promote new forms of engagement with modern music.

ECCE offers concerts, symposia, master classes, and forums on subjects ranging from the composer/performer dynamic to the historical development and future of modern music. It also offers community outreach events, with the hope of inspiring audiences unfamiliar with contemporary music, encouraging young musicians to pursue interests in this area, and simply communicating the joy of artistic creation.

ECCE's performers, under the artistic direction of John Aylward and Alex Lipowski, are a young, dynamic group of professional musicians. They represent a variety of aesthetic backgrounds but share a deep commitment to the performance of contemporary music. The ECCE concert series focuses on music of exciting young composers from throughout the United States and Europe, and showcases the works of established modern masters.

ECCE is an ensemble dedicated to the exploration and dissemination of the best in our ever-changing musical culture. It is our belief that lasting bridges between peoples will only spring from the nature of music and its magical capacity to explore and expose the uncharted facets of the human soul.
